History of King George County, Virginia

King George County, Virginia was formed in 1720, split from Richmond County and named for King George I of Great Britain. It was substantially reorganized in 1776 and 1777 with land from both Stafford County and Westmoreland County. Now 183 square miles, the vast majority of the land within the county is either forested or agriculture.

King George is considered to be part of the Fredericksburg region, located between Richmond, Virginia and Washington, D.C. and has an estimated population of over 27,000. With a growing state of the art fiber optics and telecommunications network, the County is also home to one of the world’s premier research and development centers. The County is listed within the Top 25 military communities, having been home to the Naval Support Facility Dahlgren since 1918.  Dahlgren Naval Base is the largest employer in King George County.
