A Brief Guide to Stafford County

Conveniently located right off of Interstate 95, approximately 40 miles south of our nation’s capital, Stafford County, currently has an estimated more than 160,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census. Stafford County has a long and rich history. Established in 1664, the County is most famous for being the location of George Washington’s childhood home at Ferry Farm. The area’s fisheries, tobacco plantations, and flour mills supplied goods to Great Britain, leading to the charter and establishment of the port town of Falmouth and Fredericksburg, located on the Rappahannock River. The Civil War also greatly impacted the area that is now Stafford County.

Currently, Stafford County is an incredibly diverse community with an endless list of places to explore, shop, and eat. You can find historic museums and memorials such as the National Museum of the Marine Corps and George Washington’s boyhood home, Ferry Farm. There are numerous Civil War trails, battlefield tours, and well-preserved landmarks such as Chatham Manor and Aquia Episcopal Church. For those interested in water-related activities, there is access to the Rappahannock River, the Potomac River, Mooney Lake, Aquia Landing Park, as well as several other lakes and waterways. There are also numerous local breweries, wineries, and restaurants to visit and tour as well.

Stafford County Public Schools (SCPS) has a current student population of 29,587 students. The 280 square mile county includes 17 different elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 5 high schools, and 2 early learning education centers. All of the SCPS schools are fully accredited.
